Intent
 
At West Kirby Primary School we are geographers! We want them to have no limits to what their ambitions are and grow up wanting to use their geography knowledge and skills. They may want to be Weather Forecasters, Climate Change Analyst, Environmental Manager or a Surveyor.  We want our children to be enthused by Geography. Our aim is that, through the teaching of Geography at West Kirby Primary School, we provide a purposeful platform for exploring, appreciating and understanding the world that we live in. In Geography, pupils in our school will learn the skills of understanding locational knowledge. We also intend for children to become knowledgeable about our local community and beyond. We will encourage all pupils to be curious, excited and ask questions about the world they live in.
 
 
Implementation 
  • West Kirby Primary School has a two year rolling Geography Scheme of work, which is regularly reviewed and refined to ensure a progressive, coherent and ambitious curriculum is in place. 
  • At West Kirby Primary School, our half termly units of work have either a Geography focus or History focus.
  • Where beneficial cross curricular links are made with Geography.
  • Location knowledge and map work are woven throughout our Geography units of work.
  • We have developed a progression of skills for each year group, which enables pupils to build on and develop their knowledge and skills each year.
  • In order to support children in their ability to know more and remember more, there are opportunities to review their learning (flashbacks) that has taken part in previous units of work as well as previous lessons.
  • At the beginning of each unit of work, children will review previous learning and will have the opportunity to share what they may already know about the unit of work.
  • Enquiry Questions introduce the lesson to the children, so that they have a coherent understanding about what they need to know and understand by the end of the lesson.
  • Knowledge Organisers are shared with the pupils at the start of each Geography unit of work. These detail key information and vocabulary. They aim to support children with their acquisition of knowledge and are used as a reference document.
  • Adapted teaching is in place to ensure that all pupils can successfully access the Geography curriculum.
  • The task that the children complete is closely linked to the Enquiry Question to support the knowledge and Skills of Geography. 
  • Class displays linked to the Geography unit of work, show the vocabulary we expect the children to be using, support the children in their learning, and create a rich learning environment.
  • Effective use of educational visits/visitors are planned, to engage, enrich and enhance the pupil’s learning experiences within the Geography curriculum.
  • New and updated Geography resources are shared regularly with staff.
  • CPD opportunities are supported and encouraged where possible to develop the Teaching and Learning of Geography. 
  • Technology is used to explore areas of the world that we can not visit on an educational visit. 
  • The local area around our school is used to support the Teaching and Learning of Geography e.g. Ashton Park, West Kirby Coast Line, Hilbre Island. 
 
Impact 

We use robust assessment strategies within each Geography lesson. Staff use this information to inform future planning. This helps staff to provide the best possible support for all of our pupils, including SEND children. At the end of each unit of work, formative assessments are completed by all of the children to assess their knowledge and understanding. These formative assessments are analysed and shared with the Geography Subject Leader so that further analysis and monitoring can take place. 

At the end of each Geography lesson it is vital that each child can articulate a correct answer to the Enquiry question that was shared at the start of the lesson. 

Our Geography curriculum will lead pupils to be enthusiastic Geography learners, evidenced in a range of ways, including children's books, class big book, our displays and the children's own opinions of their learning (pupil voice).

By the time pupils leave West Kirby Primary School, they will...

  • Have an extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary.
  • Have an excellent knowledge of where places are and what they are like.
  • Have a passion for and commitment to the subject, and a real sense of curiosity to find out about the world and the people who live there.
  • Have the ability to express well-balanced opinions, rooted in very good knowledge and understanding about current and contemporary issues in society and the environment.
